Etymology

The word "guy" traces back to the name Guy Fawkes, the infamous conspirator in the 1605 Gunpowder Plot in England. Effigies of Fawkes ("Guys") were burned in celebrations, and the term evolved to mean "a person of odd appearance" (17th century). By the 19th century, it generalized to "any man" (initially derogatory, later neutral). The plural "guys" (now "guys") expanded to address groups informally, regardless of gender. The unrelated nautical term "guy" (rope) derives from Old French guie (guide).
