n. a newly enlisted or drafted member of the armed forces
n. a new member of an organization or group
vt. to enlist (someone) in the armed forces
vt. to seek to employ (someone) for an organization or purpose
The word "recruit" originates from the French recruter, derived from recroître (to grow again). It combines the prefix re- (again) and the root croitre (to grow), from Latin crescere. Historically, it referred to replenishing troops by enlisting new members, metaphorically "regrowing" an army. Over time, it expanded to general organizational contexts.
